The death of a man who was pulled from a burning South Side Slopes home early today has been ruled a suicide.

The Allegheny County medical examiner's office ruled that John McMahon, 66, died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Officers in Zone 3 responded to the report of a fire on Eleanor Street shortly after midnight. The officers forced their way into the burning home where they found Mr. McMahon unresponsive on a couch with an apparent bullet wound to the head.

They removed him from the home and medics took him to UPMC Mercy, where he was pronounced dead.

Pittsburgh homicide and arson detectives are investigating.
