A man killed Thursday night in the hallway of a Lawrenceville apartment building was shot through the door of a unit used as a makeshift recording studio, Pittsburgh police said Friday.
Homicide detectives are investigating the death of Solomon T. Burton, 25, of Mt. Lebanon.
Burton was shot multiple times around 9:45 p.m. at 4741 Butler St. and died a short time later at the scene. An autopsy listed the cause of death as gunshot wounds of the head and trunk.
A handgun was found lying on the ground outside of the apartment, Pittsburgh police said, and investigators were working to discover whether it belonged to Burton.
If so, Burton, a convicted felon, would have been carrying it illegally.
Burton tried to enter the apartment when he was shot in the chest, police said. It is not clear why he was at the apartment.
Several people were inside the second-floor apartment at the time of the shooting. Police interviewed four of them. They were released.
Police said other people inside the apartment fled before police arrived.
The three-story brick building has a camera mounted on its facade. A neighbor said there also were cameras in the back.
The homeowner could not be reached for comment and no one answered at any of the apartments Friday.
"I didn't know it was even rented out let alone have a studio in there," said the neighbor, who did not want to give his name. "I never heard any music in that place."
The interior door to the building's apartments is locked and people must be buzzed in. It is unclear how Burton got into the building.
County court records show that Burton pleaded guilty in 2005 to felonies in three different cases. He was arrested by Wilkinsburg police and charged with numerous crimes. Most were withdrawn, and Burton was left to plead guilty to two counts of robbery with inflicting serious bodily injury and receiving stolen property.
Burton was sentenced to four to seven years in prison and five years of probation.
