The family of a 2-year-old boy who was killed at the zoo is asking that everyone bring a toy construction truck to his funeral home Friday to donate to a children's Christmas charity.
Maddox Derkosh was the only child of Jason and Elizabeth Derkosh of Whitehall. Family members who gathered at the Derkosh home Monday evening declined additional comment.
The Allegheny County medical examiner's office said the toddler died Sunday of blood loss by multiple trauma, the result of being mauled by wild African dogs.
Police said he fell into the exhibit after his mom lifted him into a standing position on a 4-foot-high wooden railing to get a better view of the animals in the enclosure. The dogs attacked him almost immediately after he hit the ground.
Friends are invited to visitation at William Slater II Funeral Service, 1650 Greentree Road, Scott, from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday. That is where the family requests people bring the trucks.
In addition, a Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Bernard Catholic Church, 311 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon.
Maddox is survived by his parents, grandparents Martin and Karen Noone, Teena Derkosh and William Corry, great-grandparents Anne Kendzerski, Eva Derkosh, and Anna and Harold Wolfinger, uncles Martin Noone and Erik Noone, and aunt Janelle Derkosh.mobilehome - neigh_city
