A West Virginia woman charged with trying to suffocate her infant son at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC may have tried to do the same thing up to 15 times since August, Pittsburgh police said.

Rachel Nelson, 22, is charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment. Police said she tried to suffocate the baby on Friday and Saturday.

Lt. Kevin Kraus said the baby had been treated at a hospital in Charleston, W.Va., for six other incidents since August in which he had turned blue and had to be resuscitated. After the sixth incident, he was transferred to Children's, where he remains in stable condition under police guard.

The sheriff's office in Boone County, W.Va., where the family lives, is investigating the prior incidents.
