Ousted Highmark CEO Kenneth Melani has resigned as chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

The group's executive committee accepted Dr. Melani's resignation Wednesday. A spokeswoman for the trust declined to say whether Dr. Melani, who had been on the board since 2005, provided an explanation for his request to leave.

Dr. Melani was charged last month with simple assault and defiant trespass after police said he punched Mark Myler, the husband of his lover, Highmark employee Melissa Myler, during an altercation at Mr. Myler's Oakmont home.

Dr. Melani has requested that a judge delay his preliminary hearing so that he can undergo counseling in hopes of having his charges withdrawn and expunged.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has appointed two co-chairs -- Carolyn Duronio and Chuck Queenan -- to fill Dr. Melani's position until the board chooses a long-term successor.
