Police arrested the mother of a 1-month-old found early Friday morning abandoned on a sidewalk on the North Side.
The female infant is healthy and was in the custody of Allegheny County's Office of Children, Youth and Families as of Friday afternoon, according to police.
Police found the infant in a car seat on the sidewalk in the 1600 block of Marquise Way around 3 a.m.
A witness told police that Evette Smith of the North Side, mother of the infant, banged on a door at a residence on Marquise Way screaming expletives before leaving the baby on the sidewalk.
The witness "indicated that he had made no arrangements ... to watch the child as he was unsure if he was the father and was not taking responsibility for the child," police said.
Police went to Ms. Smith's residence on Watson Street and found five children, ranging from 6 to 11 years old, alone in the home.
Ms. Smith is charged with six counts of endangering the welfare of children. The other children were released to relatives.
