A man was killed in Garfield this afternoon after he was shot in the head while driving through a public housing community, police said.
Pittsburgh police were summoned to the 5300 block of Cornwall Street at about 2 p.m. for reports of someone shooting at an SUV, said Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki.
They found one man dead inside the car, a white Ford Explorer, with the driver's window broken and several bullet casings nearby.
The Allegheny County medical examiner identified the man as LaJuane Pendelton, 30, address unknown. An autopsy will be performed on Monday.
Police had not arrested anyone in connection with the crime.
The shooting happened on property belonging to the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh, in a secluded nine-building community that residents said they simply called "Cornwall." The city started closing the property earlier this year, though a few people still live there, residents said.
Police combed the street this afternoon with a K-9 police dog, searching nearby wooded areas for evidence, as families and children gathered to watch.
In November 2009, 23-year-old Timothy Bottoms was shot and killed on the same block where today's shooting occurred. Today, a Dumpster by the SUV still bore a spray-painted remembrance: "R.I.P Tymizzy."
