Pittsburgh Mayor Bob O'Connor said yesterday that he hopes to open 17 or 18 city swimming pools this summer.

That's up from 14 last year, but down from 31 in 2003.

Definitely opening under city operation are pools at Schenley Park, Riverview Park and Highland Park; pools in Bloomfield, Homewood, Westwood and Sheraden; and the Sue Murray pool on the North Side, Moore Park pool in Brookline, Ormsby pool on the South Side, Magee pool in Greenfield and Phillips pool in Carrick.

The private Pittsburgh Project will operate Fowler pool on the North Side, said Council President Luke Ravenstahl.

Businessman Ed Dunlap will make a contribution and host a May 18 fund-raiser to open Ream Pool in Mount Washington, said Councilman Dan Deasy.

City-operated pools open the third week of June.
