The Y of Greater Pittsburgh and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh today are announcing a partnership that will enable mentors and the children to work out together at branches of the Y of Greater Pittsburgh.

Formerly called the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, the group is offering a free-one year membership to the "bigs" and "littles" as long as they attend together.

"The partnership will not only give the 'Big/Little' pairs additional options for positive mentoring activities, but will also promote community-based healthy living solutions," a news release announcing the partnership stated.

In the news release, Rig Riggins, chief executive officer, Y of Greater Pittsburgh, said, “Big Brothers Big Sisters is a positive and effective program that embodies the Y’s core values of youth development and social responsibility. We fully support the efforts of these volunteers who donate their time to guide young people through difficult circumstances and help them grow into confident, responsible adults."

Also in the news release, Jan Glick, chief executive officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, said, “This initiative will introduce our ‘littles’ to physical fitness opportunities they may otherwise never have."

The announcement was being made this afternoon at a basketball competition at the Thelma Lovette Y in the Hill District.
