Pittsburgh police said today that they will start an investigation into allegations that a former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach molested a 13-year-old boy in a hotel room here in 2002.

Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said the police bureau became aware of media reports today indicating that an alleged victim, Zach Tomaselli, has told Syracuse police that Bernie Fine molested him at a Pittsburgh hotel in January 2002, when Syracuse was in town to play Pitt.

The alleged victim has not filed a report with city police and the sex assault unit had no knowledge of the incident. But Cmdr. Stangrecki said in a release today that Pittsburgh police has requested an affidavit that Mr. Tomaselli filed with Syracuse authorities and will "initiate an investigation" with Syracuse into the allegations.

Mr. Tomaselli is the third man to accuse Mr. Fine of molesting him when he was a boy. The university fired the coach on Sunday.
