The University of Pittsburgh will hire Miami (Ohio) head coach Michael Haywood to lead its football program, sources said today.

Haywood was one of the first known candidates to be contacted and interviewed by Pitt last week and he was brought to campus for a second interview which continued late into the afternoon today. He also was to meet Chancellor Mark Nordenberg and other key Pitt administrators.

Haywood will be introduced as the next coach at a news conference, which could take place as early as tomorrow and then he will immediately start assembling a staff and trying to retain most of Pitt's nationally ranked recruiting class.

Haywood is Pitt's first African-American head football coach. He has been the coach of the Redhawks for the past two seasons and has led them to a record of 10-15.

That record doesn't tell his entire story. He took over a struggling program and, after going 1-11 in his first season, led the Redhawks to a record of 9-4 this season. They won the Mid-American Conference championship game over Northern Illinois.

Prior to arriving at Miami, Haywood was the offensive coordinator under Charlie Weis at Notre Dame from 2005 to 2008 and had stops at Texas and LSU.
