A 37-year-old Fayette County man died in a crash that occurred after severe weather washed out a roadway.
State police said Thomas C. Whipkey of Perry Township was driving south on Falbo Road around 1 a.m. and did not realize the roadway was no longer there.
As much as four inches of rain fell overnight in Fayette County, although a flood warning expired this morning.
“The initial point of impact occurred as the unit traveled into the washed out roadway, which was now a very large culvert,” the police report said. “The operator was unrestrained and as a result sustained a fatal head injury.”
Police said another motorist discovered the washed out roadway on her way to work this morning. When township workers arrived, they found Mr. Whipkey’s car in the culvert 27 feet below the roadway, the police report said.
The accident took place on Falbo Road about 100 feet east of Layton Road, police said.
