An Upper St. Clair man who resigned last month from the top post at the National Energy Technology Laboratory in South Park was indicted today for obstruction of justice.
Anthony V. Cugini, 54, is accused in the one-page indictment of instructing others to delete and redesignate computer files and provide false answers to investigators’ questions in order to “protect him” during a Department of Energy inspector general’s probe into the lab. The investigation dealt with accusations that he misused his position, according to U.S. Attorney David Hickton’s office.
Mr. Cugini declined immediate comment.
Mr. Cugini resigned from the post of director of the lab after three weeks on administrative leave.
The lab, the fossil fuel research and development arm of the U.S. Department of Energy, did not then give a reason for the change in his status. Mr. Cugini was the lab’s director since April 2010, and was with the organization for more than 25 years.
