2002 Photos of the Year:
Marathon Mom

Sunday, December 29, 2002

First published May 7, 2002
By Martha Rial (Rial and Post-Gazette staff writer Lori Shontz traveled to Kenya for a look at how running has created opportunities for women there.)

Four-year-old Jane idolizes her mother, marathon world-record holder Catherine Ndereba. Here, she waits just after dawn for her mother and father to pass by on their daily run.

Rial: "In many ways, this photograph symbolizes the whole reason the series was done -- to show how the women runners are inspiring the next generation of Kenyan women to excellence," Rial says. "People always ask me why I feel compelled to work in Africa. If they could meet the people I've encountered and see the dramatic beauty of the continent, I know they'd understand."

The story.
