2002 Photos of the Year:
What a Hoot

By Robin Rombach

Wide-eyed Katie Hough, 10, of Neville Island had a close encounter with an Eastern screech owl brought by naturalist Chuck Tague of Mount Washington to the Neville Naturalists group, a nine-week environmental program for children.

Rombach: "The assignment was just a nice neighborhood kids-visiting-nature type of thing, but I thought I had missed a good picture. I had positioned myself so that when she came face to face with the owl, I could get her surprised expression. But I thought the owl had covered her face too much, not knowing that her eye would be so visible. It didn't know until I came back to the office and could blow it up that you could see her expression."
