Rescue workers pull the broken bit that delayed drilling in the effort to save nine miners trapped 240 feet below the surface in the Quecreek Mine. A super drill had bored 105 feet into the ground when the bit broke about 1:50 a.m. Drilling had to be halted for more than 18 hours before the bit could be removed and another one put to work.

O'Neill: "There was so much waiting involved in this situation, and there were so many restrictions that it made it more gratifying to make a revealing photo. All the media were kept a few miles away, and we were brought up in groups for 30 minutes at a time. After waiting for many hours, I had a chance to go to the rescue site. This photo happened in about the 28th minute of our group's time up at the Arnolds' farm. I feel very fortunate to have made one of the photos that represent the teamwork that it took have a successful rescue."
