Eat, Drink and Be Charitable: Looking for something different to do on a Monday night? Head to Bar Marco, which opens its doors to guest chefs, such as Kevin Sousa, who whip up an impromptu feast for patrons. “We team up with a different nonprofit every week, or a chef who dreams of having their own restaurant someday. All of the food proceeds go directly to the organization,” said co-owner, Bobby Fry. Last Monday’s nonprofit was the Pittsburgh Food Policy Council, which also hosted a VIP cocktail hour leading up to a surprise paella.
Food For Thought: Pittsburgh is No. 1 in cities of its size for presence of food deserts, areas without ready access to fresh, healthy and affordable food. How do we make a culture of health and wellness? That’s what the Pittsburgh Food Council aims to do with various projects like food banks and Grow Pittsburgh, said Dawn Plummer, council director. “I’m here to support the city’s access to healthy foods and making it a priority,” added patron Anne Sekula from Squirrel Hill.
