Renovation contest adds category for commercial properties

If you own an old house, you know how difficult it can be to update it yet keep its unique charm. Eight years ago, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Design Center teamed up to honor homeowners and contractors who do it well with the Renovation Inspiration Contest. Each year, judges choose up to six residential renovations, featuring them in the Home & Garden section and offering the owners free design consults and tickets for a year's worth of Pittsburgh house tours.

This year, we decided to let business owners in on the fun. Old commercial buildings are just as hard -- if not harder -- to renovate well, and if your business is in an old house, well, God bless you for trying. So now the contest has three categories: small residential (projects less than $50,000), large residential (greater than $50,000) and commercial (no limit on cost).
