If you want to know the history of 121 Hays Road in Upper St. Clair, you'll have to rely on locals with long memories.

"According to local residents, the house was built for Stickler DeMuth in 1881. It was built on land the first settler of Upper St. Clair, John Fife, traded for with the local Indian tribe, a thousand acres for one flintlock rifle and a pair of moccasins," said Jean Brown of the Upper St. Clair Historical Society.

The wood-frame Victorian farmhouse, the oldest one in the neighborhood, is now on the market for $589,000 (MLS No. 910567) through Diane Hovarth of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services (412-833-3600, ext. 219 or www.howardhanna.com). An open house will be held today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The L-shaped house has Italianate features, seven fireplaces, four bedrooms and 21/2 baths. It's situated on a 1.8-acre lot with beautiful mature trees and plenty of room for outside entertaining. If that's not enough, the front porch offers a shaded respite suitable for rocking chairs and lemonade on a hot summer afternoon.

Upon entering the 17- by 7-foot foyer, the visitor notices a grand staircase and hardwood floors that run throughout the house. The formal living room is to the left and dining room on the right. Both rooms have high ceilings, built-in cabinetry and functioning gas fireplaces. The living room, which has several tall windows, measures 17 by 17 feet and the dining room is 17 by 14 feet.

Off the living room is a 16- by 15-foot library or den with built-in bookshelves and cabinetry. The house features original interior trim and molding, windows and six-panel solid wood doors.

The 17- by 14-foot kitchen, which has not been updated, has stainless-steel countertops, a built-in stovetop and oven and hanging wrought-iron pot rack. Wood beams and brickwork surrounding the two ovens add to the charm of the room.

Off the kitchen is a 17- by 7-foot laundry room which also functions as a mud room. There is a first-floor powder room off the foyer.

A 22- by 17-foot family room features a tin ceiling, wood paneling and tall windows. Beneath the family room is a two-car garage with access to the house. A breezeway leads from the family room to a media room created by previous owners from part of a barn. It measures 30 by 16 feet and has a beamed ceiling and double-sided wood-burning fireplace.

At one end of the room is a spiral staircase that leads down to a basement office with bookcases and rustic stonework along the base of the walls.

There are four bedrooms on the second floor ranging in size from 17 by 16 feet to 16 by 13 feet. The master has a wood-burning fireplace and two others have gas fireplaces. The smallest bedroom can only be accessed by the back stairs. There are two full baths on the second floor.

After the current owner purchased the house in 2000 for $470,000, the electrical and plumbing systems and furnace were replaced.

The county assessed value is $461,200 (www2.county.allegheny.pa.us/RealEstate/Default.aspx). Over the last three years, seven properties have sold on Hays Road for prices ranging from $104,452 in October 2009 to $275,000 in April 2010. One property sold twice (www.realstats.net).

Located near Route 19, a main artery in the South Hills, the property offers easy access to South Hills Village mall and its LRT stop.
