The plump new Doll lamp by the French designer Ionna Vautrin for Foscarini gets its shape from objects that are poles apart. "My first intention was to reinterpret old petrol lamps, with a simple base and blown glass on top," Ms. Vautrin said.

But looking for a more friendly form, she took equal inspiration from wooden Japanese Kokeshi dolls. "I love that they have a really thin body and big face, and I wanted to express these different proportions," she said.

The resulting lamp has a bulbous glass shade that appears to sit precariously on a plastic cylindrical base. The base comes in four colors: red, green, gray and ivory. Doll will be available in November, for $314. Information: (212) 257-4412 or foscarini.com.
