Flowers and music are a beautiful combination, but rain and outdoor concerts do not go together as well. That's the reason the folks at Beulah Presbyterian Church in Churchill are a little nervous about whether the Freya String Quartet will be able to perform at 4 p.m. today in the church's Eleanor Stuckeman Memorial Garden.

"We'll just move it inside," said office coordinator Lucinda Wiebe.

That would be a shame because this concert, the second in the church's Music on the Hill Series, is to celebrate the courtyard garden's 50th anniversary.

Kay George, who created the garden ministry in 2000, meets each spring with Joseph Vigliotti of Vigliotti Landscaping in Penn Hills and other committee members to discuss the flowers that will be planted. Most are annuals to supplement the shrubs, hostas, daylilies and other perennials.

There were more changes than usual this year. The garden was torn up in December to repair a leak in a gas line. This time, Mr. Vigliotti suggested shrimp plants, 3-foot tall shrubs with pink flowers that look like their namesake. Among the new perennials are daisies and 'Autumn Joy' sedum. There is also a bed filled with purple, pink and white verbena and ornamental edibles like yellow peppers, purple kale and cabbage. Elephant ears, an annual favorite, are back again.

The garden, which has a sprinkler system, is an integral part of the church's mission. Many groups meet there and the Beulah Christian pre-school and child-care program uses it often, Ms. Wiebe said.

"Parents can see their children lying on a warm blanket in the sun. Knowing they have a green space to play in is really important to them," she said.

The garden is completely handicapped accessible and located behind the church at 2500 McCrady Road, 15235. For more information on the concert and whether it will be held outdoors, call 412-242-4570 or go to the Beulah Presbyterian Church Facebook page or website, www.beulahpresby.org.
