It's a week of festivals, cooking classes, hurricane relief


Bakery Square Summer Send Off: Food trucks, craft beers and live music. 4-8 p.m. Friday at Bakery Square, East Liberty. Free admission; $6 for single drink tickets, $20 for drink wristbands. (search for “Bakery Square Summer Send Off”).

Jam on Walnut: Draft wagons with beer specials plus live music. 7-11 p.m. Saturday along Walnut Street in Shadyside. $5 wristbands. Proceeds benefit Humane Animal Rescue. (search for “Jam on Walnut: September Edition”).

Wholey’s 105th Anniversary Party: Seafood class (10 a.m.), cake cutting (noon), airbrush tattoos, petting zoo, balloons, samples, giveaways, live music. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Wholey’s, Strip District.

Pittsburgh Pierogi Festival: Pierogies from more than 40 restaurants and purveyors, plus live music, a pop-up pierogi marketplace and children’s activities. 1-6 p.m. Sunday at Kennywood Park, West Mifflin. $28 at gate, $24 in advance, $12 in advance for ages 3-12; free for children under 3. Tickets include access to seven Kennywood rides; food and drink are extra.


Beginner’s Guide to the Mediterranean Diet: Learn healthy meal ideas and cooking techniques to help manage diabetes. 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria at UPMC St. Margaret, Aspinwall. Free. Register ahead at

Let’s Cook Workshop: Learn tips and techniques for eating healthy foods on a budget. 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church, Millvale. Free. Registration preferred by calling 412-408-3830, ext. 3225.

Shucking 101: Practice safe oyster shucking techniques, taste different species and discuss sustainable farming techniques. 4 p.m. Saturday at Muddy Waters Oyster Bar, Shadyside. $50 for the class, 18 oysters and two cocktails; $75 for a “Bad Mother Shucker” ticket adds a shucking knife and Muddy Waters merchandise. Mushroom classes and walk: Morning classes in the environmental center, followed by an afternoon mushroom walk on the park’s trails. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Harrison Hills Park, Natrona Heights. Pack a lunch. Free.

Tea classes and tasting: Learn about tea history, types of tea, steeping techniques and more, plus taste several types of tea along with European biscuits. 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday at Blue Monkey Tea Co., Squirrel Hill. $25; includes a Classic Duo Tea Sampler to take home. Hurricane relief

Toss to Texas: Entertainment, raffle baskets and family activities 3-8 p.m. Saturday at TGI Fridays, Ross. Funds raised will help to pay to transport supplies to Texas hurricane victims.

Sheetz hurricane relief: Sheetz will match in-store hurricane relief donations up to $50,000. All 560 locations across Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia are taking donations at checkout through Sept. 30. In other news, Sheetz has launched Kidz Mealz, with a variety of entrée choices served with sides like fruit or strawberry yogurt and beverage choices such as milk and apple juice.

Other events

Hello Kitty Cafe Truck: The truck selling Hello Kitty confections and merchandise visits Pittsburgh from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday at in the Ross Park Mall parking lot near Cheesecake Factory. (search for “Hello Kitty Café Truck East – Pittsburgh Appearance”).

Childhood cancer fundraiser: Pennsylvania Chipotle locations will raise money to benefit THON, Penn State University’s childhood cancer charity, from 10:45 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday. Mention the fundraiser at the register, and 50 percent of the proceeds will go to THON.
