Plus, a chocolate pop-up, a Lawrenceville bar opening and a new Dormont coffee shop
A new group called "The Pittsburgh Canning Exchange" is hosting a Community Canning Party for both new and experienced canners from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at Earthen Vessels Outreach, a community kitchen in Friendship.
Canners will make salsa together. The folks from Canning Exchange will have jars and locally-grown produce available for canners to work with. If you have your own jars or produce, feel free to bring them along and use the space alongside other canners. Water-bath canners will be available for everyone's use.
For $5, you can reserve a space and get a piece of homemade pie. To take salsa home, you can pay $3 per pint jar if you use Canning Exchange jars and produce, $2 per jar if you bring either jars or produce of your own, and $1 per jar if you bring both jars and produce.
To register and for information about other Canning Exchange events, go to canningexchange.org. Also, see next week's Post-Gazette Food & Flavor for more about the Canning Exchange folks and about canning in general.
