Del's Bar & Ristorante DelPizzo has been a fixture on Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield for more than a half-century. Yet in recent years, many customers have complained about a noticeable decline in the quality of its food, decor and service.
So when Food Network's "Restaurant: Impossible" put out a casting call last year for struggling Pittsburgh restaurateurs, owners John and Marianne DelPizzo braved the inevitable public humiliation and trouble that goes hand in hand with being on a reality show, and put in an application.
Italians, after all, are gutsy.
The third-generation restaurant near the Bloomfield Bridge was selected, and in early December the acerbic (and freakishly muscular) chef Robert Irvine and his crew came to town to film an episode for the show's third season.
Was $10,000 and 48 hours of help enough to help the ailing restaurant regain its edge? Is the updated menu any good? Did the DelPizzo family and its staff take Mr. Irvine's ruthless advice to heart?
Tune in to the Food Network at 10 p.m. Wednesday to see.
Correction/Clarification: (Published February 24, 2012) A story Thursday about Del's in Bloomfield appearing on the Food Network show "Restaurant: Impossible" gave the wrong last name for the host, who is Robert Irvine.
