As the department chair of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh's fashion retail management and fashion design programs, Stephanie Taylor regularly finds herself having to convince people in other cities that, yes, Pittsburgh does have a fashion community.
But when she tells them about the city's budding boutique scene and major retailers that call Pittsburgh home, such as American Eagle and ModCloth, their interest perks up, she says.
To help Pittsburgh fashion gain attention and connections with other cities' style scenes, Ms. Taylor is looking to start a local chapter of Fashion Group International, a nonprofit that helps unite and promote fashion insiders from around the world.
Decades ago, Pittsburgh had a local chapter, but bringing one back at a time when shops, fashion trucks, fashion education and fashion-centric events, such as Pittsburgh Fashion Week and Style Week Pittsburgh, are on the rise could help the city more easily network on a national, or possibly even global, scale.
At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Ms. Taylor, along with designer Kiya Tomlin, Pittsburgh Fashion Week founder Miyoshi Anderson and Pittsburgh magazine fashion and style editor Reese Randall, will hold an exploratory meeting at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Downtown, to gauge local interest and educate other members of the city's fashion community about the benefits of belonging to Fashion Group International.

Sephora debuts new Pantone Color IQ technology for matching foundation to skin tone: The cosmetics retail chain is hoping to put an end to the frustrating guessing game of finding the perfect foundation color with the new SEPHORA + PANTONE IQ system. A hand-held device captures an image of the skin, which analyzes it and assigns a PANTONE SkinTone number. The number is then used to determine the foundation that is the best match. Similar technology has been used in the design world to identify colors.
