Beer: Brewing Up A Cure is Saturday, as is Lower Burrell brewery's opening

Brewing Up A Cure, the 11th-annual beer fest to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, happens from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the PPG Wintergarden in Pittsburgh. Two of the scores of beers they’ll be serving are collaborations between home brewers from Three Rivers Underground Brewers, which hosts the event, and two commercial breweries: Lawrenceville’s Roundabout and Springdale’s Leaning Cask. 

The Roundabout offering is a Belgian-style golden strong ale, made with all pilsner malt and sugar and Motueka, Lublin and Tettnang hops, then steeped with a blend of Darjeeling tea and sencha green tea provided by Tupelo Honey Teas in Millvale. Shaler’s Shane Walters, one of the TRUB members who participated in that brew, tried an early sample of it and says, “It tasted awesome.”

At Leaning Cask, the amateurs helped a pro create a traditional English-style olde ale brewed with roasted pecans and maple sugar and aged on hard maple wood. 

Festival attendees can try both of those along with some 75 beers from home breweries (with names such as Squawking Parrot Brewery, Weird Introvert Brewing and Fast Dogs Brooing) and more beers from commercial brewers. 

Look for Mr. Walters, who will be pouring samples of his signature Flat Face IPA — named for his pug, Milo.

Attendees also can nosh on foods from local purveyors such as Walnut Grill, Noodles & Co., Diamond Market, Emerald Valley Artisans, Jenny Lee Bakery, Papa J's, Edible Arrangements and Totopo.

And they can bid in an auction for items including Steelers and Pirates tickets, tickets to other brew fests and other beer swag, while also enjoying live music. Watch Paints by Kait’s Kait Shoab do a painting of the Pittsburgh skyline, then enter the raffle to win it at the end of the night.  

Admission is $50 per person, or $60 for VIP tickets and an hour-early admission. And all the proceeds go the the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, for which the fest started because one member’s daughter had been born with the genetic lung disorder, has raised more than $250,000 so far. The girl is 13.

If you don’t make it to the fest, you can still try the two collaboration brews, which will be for sale at their respective breweries while they last, with a portion of proceeds going to CYF.

Opening to the public on Saturday is the region’s newest brewery and taproom: Conny Creek Brewing Co. 

The place is located in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County, just off Route 56 northeast of New Kensington. But the name and the twin fishing hooks logo refer to Connoquennessing Creek in Butler County where co-owner and brewer Lee Layton grew up. The longtime home brewer and his wife, Erin, who live in Apollo, in January bought and have since renovated the former Freedom Farms Cafe & Carry-out into a brewery bar that can seat 50 or 60 people indoors and about as many outside. 

Mr. Layton, who’s been sampling his stuff at area festivals for two years now, is brewing in back on a 2-barrel brewhouse with four 4-barrel fermenters. Ready for the opening are 10 beers, including a cream ale, a British mild, a Belgian-style single, a Belgian IPA, a stout, a pale wheat, an American pale ale, a hazy IPA, a gose and a dry-hopped sour.  

“A little of everything,” says Mr. Layton, 29, who’s day job for now is working in a lab in the oil and gas industry. “I’m really open to anything.” He is looking forward to using a space he created for funky and sour and other barrel-aged beers. 

They’re starting out selling pints but eventually will sell growlers to go; in the meantime, look for the growlers serving as lights over the bar. They eventually will schedule food trucks to appear, but in the meantime, are serving light snacks and plan to scale up their own food offerings, too. But in the meantime he says, “If feels really great to finally open those doors up.”
