This weekend is the 17th Great European Beerfest in the lot at the Sharp Edge Beer Emporium in Friendship/East Liberty. Tickets are $60 (at Sharp Edge locations) or $65 at the door, for each of two tasting sessions Saturday -- 3 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. -- and one Sunday -- 2 to 5 p.m. There'll be more than 100 different imported beers, live entertainment and food for purchase, and attendees names will be entered into a drawing for beery prizes in the last hour of each session.
At 7 p.m. Friday, it all kicks off at the Beer Emporium with the Ultimate Beer Dinner, featuring five courses and beers from Brasserie de Silly. Cost for that is $75; reserve at 412-661-3537; more at sharpedgebeer.com.
Sharp Edge Restaurants cellarman Brett McMahan says he is very much looking forward to tasting Silly Sour, which is making its world debut here.
He says other new and notable products include Crabbie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer ("I truly wanted to hate this product, but it was really refreshing and quite enjoyable. Perfect for summertime.") as well as a bunch of Belgians: Blanche de Namur from Brasserie du Bocq; St. Stefanus Grand Cru and Blonde; La Bier de Beloeil from Brasserie Dupont; Scaldis Refermentee; gluten-free Brunehaut Amber and Blond; and Buffalo 1907 and Bitter.
Pennsylvania Brew Tours is expanding into wine, with a "Wine in the Strip" tour from 1 to about 4 p.m. on Aug. 9.
Starting outside the Pittsburgh Public Market, the tour is to hit three "urban" wineries: R. Wine Cellar, Pittsburgh Winery, and Carlo's Garage Winery for tastings and tours. Carlo's will provide hors d'oeuvres, and the tour company will provide history of the neighborhood.
Tour company co-owner Jake Voelker says that Wine in the Strip will be a separate venture from Pennsylvania Beer Tours, and that he intends to add more wine tours, including tours outside the Strip eventually. If this first one sells out, they'll post a waiting list for future tours, as "we want to keep these smaller and more intimate."
Only a few tickets are available for $89 each; visit pghwinetours.showclix.com. More on Pennsylvania Brew Tours: pabrewtours.com.
