I am not a religious scholar and have not read Reza Aslan's book "Zealot." Therefore I cannot pass judgment on his work. I can, however, pass judgment on the Rev. Kris D. Stubna's characterization of Mr. Aslan as a mere "creative writer" ("Scholarship Lacking," Oct. 13 letters).
A simple Google search proves Mr. Aslan's degrees include a bachelor of arts in religious studies (New Testament; minor in Greek) from Santa Clara University, a master of theological studies (history of religions) from Harvard University, a Ph.D. in the sociology of religions from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a master of fine arts from the University of Iowa.
This is not a Stephen King "wannabe." Is the Rev. Stubna so frightened of Mr. Aslan that he has to misrepresent his qualifications in such a dishonest manner? Shame!
