I guess I'm pretty idealistic and never thought that in my country elected people would want to see the country's wealth, prestige and social integrity eroded. I was shocked at the denying of votes and the political coup that put George W. Bush in the White House in 2000. But now, I'm seeing a small contingency of actually elected people, perhaps 40 in number, opting to shut down this country with its global responsibilities and interdependencies. They certainly are achieving their goal of creating a smaller government by laying off non-congressional employees. They are reaping their political rewards at the cost of the many.
I hear of hostage taking south of our border, where wealth is traded for people's lives. Do they ask each other, "Are we trading humanity for our narrow political gains?" This sounds like a new word I just learned, "spoliation" (i.e., plundering). A couple of years ago, someone suggested to me that TEA Party stands for "The Enemies of America"! That's too harsh, I thought. But now I wonder, are we all being plundered?
