As a health care professional with 35 years' experience in the mental health field, I want my family and my clients to have access to health insurance not dependent upon employment. We are the only country in the world with health insurance associated with employment. We do not need the middle man of the insurance industry to siphon off precious dollars that should go directly to the provision of health care.
Many people must remain in unsatisfactory jobs, in unnecessary employment or are underemployed in order to have health insurance. We add thousands of dollars to our production and sales for companies to provide health insurance, which puts our American economy at a disadvantage in competing with other countries. The Chamber of Commerce absurdly supports this so that companies can keep employees tethered to their jobs essentially as indentured servants.
I fully support President Barack Obama in his stance not to negotiate with the Republican House of Representatives members who are jeopardizing the well-being of our country and perhaps the world economy.
The Republicans and Fox News are disingenuous in their casting blame on President Obama and the Democratic representatives for the shutting down of the federal government. We should have had the public option available to us at this time. Let's solve this conundrum by moving to a single-payer health system.
