The annual Veterans March for Diabetes, in which a group of veterans and other supporters walk from Erie to Pittsburgh, has gone on for 36 years, and more than $2 million has been raised for diabetes research. Still, most people in Western Pennsylvania do not know anything about the walk. In Erie, it is a different story. Every year news media are there at the start of the walk. People with diabetes want to know what is going on to help them. There are more than 1 million people with diabetes in Pennsylvania alone.
Twenty-five percent of our veterans have diabetes, and so our march goes on for a cure. This year's march, which will have eight walkers, will start Friday, Oct. 11, and go till Sunday, Oct. 13. The team will be escorted across the finish line (at the McKnight Post Office) at 4 p.m. for the 28th year by the color guard from West View VFW Post 2754.
The writer is diabetes chairman, VFW Department of Pennsylvania.
