My head is about to explode over reports of the nation-destructive plans of the Republican Party, having been hijacked by the Tea Party and suffering from "Stockholm Syndrome." I'll limit myself to just two helpings of the smorgasbord of nonsense served up by the GOP, defunding the Affordable Care Act and driving the nation into default over the debt ceiling.
First, it should be noted that voters have indeed approved Obamacare. When did that happen? When President Barack Obama was re-elected (defeating the man whose first act following inauguration was to be its repeal), with full voter awareness that the new health law was the law of the land. (It's worth noting, incidentally, that Kaiser Family Foundation polls show strong support for the law's provisions when decoupled from the word Obamacare.)
Second, while I hesitate to use such an incendiary term, attempts by the House Republicans to defund Obamacare are nothing short of treasonous. Members of Congress swore an oath to uphold the laws of the land, not frustrate their operation. If they want to repeal the law, fine, do it. But do it the American way -- win elections.
Finally, using the debt ceiling to force the far right's agenda is deeply cynical and greatly damaging to our country and its reputation. Congress has spent the money. Pay the bills. Please, Congress, gain some courage and value the good of the country over your own re-election and grip on power.
