Lee McFerren, Wilkinsburg superintendent of schools, is asking the community for support ("Wilkinsburg's New School Leader Wants Support From Community," Aug. 19).
Mr. McFerren, you have our support. However, you must consider what is currently at stake for both the children of the district and the neighborhood. In our opinion, there is no clear vision for educating the children of the district, yet property taxes are among the highest in Allegheny County. The strain this places on families in the neighborhood is immense. And now that tax bills have been released for the coming year, many families will be forced to leave -- and we are one of them.
Mr. McFerren, I ask that you and the school board give serious thought to merging with the city of Pittsburgh. This will not solve all the problems but in my opinion is a step in the right direction. The children and families in the neighborhood deserve more than what is currently offered to them. Change must come quickly as the future of the neighborhood is in jeopardy.
