I find it very unfortunate and insulting that a man with the platform that the PG's Tony Norman has needed to resort to sarcasm in his column regarding the shooting death of Zach Sheridan ("Stupidity, Not Race, Caused Oakland Killing," Aug. 6). To classify the feelings that one of the many people in our community had as "moronic" is totally unacceptable to us and needs to be addressed.
Was the shooting laced with stupidity above all? Certainly. Was the writer of the "moronic" letter to Mr. Norman probably filled with grief over this senseless act? I am sure, as were thousands of people who gathered around the Sheridan family following Zach's death. Did he or she go overboard with the Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson references? Sure.
But facts are facts: the "disrespect" issue by the lady; a young man carrying an illegal weapon, shouting "I'm from the hood"; and ultimately the cowardly act of gunning down someone who is fleeing. The suspect later headed to Eat'n Park! Are you kidding me?
I ask you, Mr Norman, do you think Isiah Smith would have turned himself in if not for being all over the video surveillance? I must admit I am one of the morons who think not.
The gun situation is completely out of hand. Mr. Norman is right about one thing: It is not a race thing, it is a stupidity thing, and I implore Mr. Norman, as an African-American leader in this community, to be more of a problem solver than an emotion igniter when tragedies like this occur. We will be watching. We are Zach
