Brian O'Neill's Aug. 1 column, "The American Story of Immigration," was excellent. He made a strong case for immigration. By being very personal and showing the story of one immigrant and his contribution, as well as that of his children and grandchildren, to our country, Mr. O'Neill made a strong point. Immigrants made this nation, made this nation grow and still make this nation grow.
Every study I have seen shows that even the most recent immigrants contribute more to the economy than they get from the economy. They are a positive factor in our growth. Statistics, however, do not have the impact on people that personal, real-life stories do. That's why his article was so good. The conclusion of the column was very strongly written and a good plea for understanding and tolerance. Thank you.
I really love it when some of our politicians state that their ancestors came here legally. Of course they did. They came when there were no restrictions on immigration. They couldn't have been illegal. There were no restrictions except for mental and physical checks. Lord help us all!
