I follow the news and often feel brokenhearted and bewildered by stories of violence, greed and injustice in society. To cope with the pain and frustration, I tell myself that the issues are too big, or too far removed from my experience, or that I cannot change unjust systems or the minds of others through debate.
But such an outlook is devoid of hope and responsibility, and that is not acceptable to me because I am a hopeful person.
Imagine the power made manifest if every good and reasonable person stood together for the qualities we want in our lives, our communities and our world. We would see that no matter our diversity and differences, we share the same values. We would grow to understand and respect one another, and this would create positive change.
Let us stand up for what we want: to be seen as an individual and receive equal treatment; opportunities to receive education and contribute to society; the opportunity to work and make a fair wage that supports oneself and one's family; safe communities; food security; housing and health care.
I have hope that we can transform our lives and communities by proclaiming our shared values for a just society, because we desire the good for ourselves, our families and our neighbors. Let's stand up together.
