The Post-Gazette editorial headline "PETA Kills: The Animal Rights Group Is Big on Euthanasia" (July 15) was a textbook example of media sensationalism and tunnel vision. I read The New York Times article referred to in the PG editorial and I feel that the Post -Gazette oversimplified the very complex debate over no-kill animal shelters vs. euthanasia.
With regard to its track record supporting animal welfare, PETA does not have to apologize to anyone. PETA advocates the saving of billions of animal lives annually through its endorsement of vegan and vegetarian diets, opposition to the fur and leather/reptile skin industries and opposition to superfluous animal experimentation. PETA is a tireless opponent of the unspeakable horror of factory farms, animal abuse in the entertainment industry and abuse of pet animals that sometimes leads to the heartbreaking need to euthanize.
Perhaps not everyone will agree with every stand that PETA takes, but it would be a far, far worse world for all animals if the organization did not exist.
