In response to the July 15 letter "What the Bible Says," which was in regard to people fighting to change Pennsylvania's laws regarding marriage: I can only ask the letter writer whether she really believes "all of it." Has she ever eaten shrimp? Or worn clothing made of mixed materials? Because these are abominations according to her Bible. Or is she just a hypocrite?
Of course the real abomination is someone who claims to follow all the Bible and still picks and chooses what to believe and whom to discriminate against. Complete, literal interpretation of the Bible is not only foolhardy but virtually impossible. Its views on everything from slavery to menstruating women are so far removed from reality in the 21st century as to be laughable.
So if she wants to set up a theocracy based on all of what the Bible has to say, be my guest. I hope that, as a woman, she enjoys her role as a second-class citizen one step above chattel. But it has no part in determining life in a representative republic that guarantees equal protection under the law.
