I believe that the assumptions regarding the purpose of the National Security Agency data collections are wrong. In my mind, the threat of terrorism has been used to enable the government to curtail our liberties in various ways. We've come to accept that our government may torture people, hold individuals indefinitely without charge, assassinate citizens and now the FBI is using drones in our country. I'm sure the first assassination here will be of a very despicable person.
Common sense dictates that anyone anywhere can perpetrate a terrorist act, as the Boston bombers exemplify. The NSA didn't stop that. I do not believe that there is any organized terrorism campaign being carried out against us.
However, our country has become extremely polarized. Our politicians are polarized as a result. They cannot cooperate to act in the common good. A recent poll suggests that 44 percent of Republicans, 18 percent of Democrats and 27 percent of independents believe armed revolution may be necessary. This, I believe, is what the NSA is about.
