This is in response in part to the chief nursing officer of UPMC who had a letter in the PG last Sunday ("UPMC's Value," June 23). It has bothered me for several days. Most folks don't question the professionalism of the employees or the UPMC system. It is top-notch. Its business practices are suspect! Especially concerning the TV ads from UPMC's chairman and chief medical officer with UPMC's claim that Highmark will divert UPMC's subscribers to Allegheny Health Network. UPMC indicates this could force the closure of hospitals and cost 11,000 jobs in the Pittsburgh area. This is a scare tactic, pure and simple.
UPMC does right now what it is saying Highmark will do. UPMC subscribers are not allowed to use West Penn Allegheny Health System hospitals as in-network hospitals or any doctor or facility affiliated with this network. It appears to me that UPMC is the 500-pound gorilla trying to become the 10,000-pound gorilla in this marketplace. There should be room for both in the Pittsburgh area!
