What was once a true source of pride for Pittsburgh has now become a disgrace.
Pittsburghers once glowed when talking about UPMC -- its groundbreaking research and cutting-edge medicine. Now, many of us cringe at the mention of its name because we associate UPMC with greed, cronyism and monopolistic-bullying behavior.
I am saddened that UPMC never reached its full potential to become peers with the Mayo or Cleveland clinics of this world. It could have become the true crown jewel for our region.
My question is what will become of UPMC once the local demographics shift and it can no longer fund its war chest with Medicare dollars that flow into its hospitals from Pittsburgh's sizable elderly population?
I welcome the Highmark presence in the local health care marketplace. UPMC has become a laggard and a legend in its own mind. It truly needs a kick in the pants so that it can reinvent itself and learn how to deliver world-class medicine again.
