State Rep. Erin Molchany, D-Mount Washington, says people are shocked when they realize how women are underrepresented in Pennsylvania politics. Ms. Molchany was referring to figures compiled by Chatham University's Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics, as reported in the Post-Gazette on May 12 ("Why Are Pa. Women Hard to Find in Politics?"). Ms. Molchany is the lone female representative from Allegheny County. Since only 17.8 percent of the state's General Assembly is composed of women, I imagine it is a pretty lonely place for Ms. Molchany in Harrisburg.

I am one of those people who were shocked at these figures. I was particularly shocked and dismayed when the Post-Gazette passed up a perfect opportunity to correct this disproportionate representation of women. The Post-Gazette could have and should have endorsed Jeanne Clark, a superbly qualified woman to represent District 8 in Pittsburgh City Council. Instead the Post-Gazette endorsed a nice young man who has limited experience outside of his duties in city council.

But this does not need to be the end of the story. I hope you will join me on May 21 and vote for the most qualified candidate in the District 8 race. That would be Jeanne Clark, and she just happens to be a woman.
