In his May 9 letter, which the PG featured under the headline "Justice Thomas Shows He Lacks Good Judgment," Robert Aiello claims that Justice Clarence Thomas "proved once again that he is an intellectual lightweight" and that he belittled the dignity of the U.S. Supreme Court by taking a shot at the president (parenthetically, I guess Mr. Aiello doesn't believe the president belittled the presidency by taking a shot at the Supreme Court during his State of the Union address). So, let's see why Mr. Aiello believes Justice Thomas displayed his ignorance and took a shot at the president.
1. Justice Thomas wasn't surprised at President Barack Obama's election because a black candidate to be elected would have to be in concert with the beliefs of the elite and media and a black candidate whom they didn't agree with would be picked apart. Hmmm. I guess I'm also ignorant.
2. Justice Thomas said he neither liked nor understood politics and Mr. Aiello believes because of that he shouldn't be in a position to make decisions that have significant political impact. Never mind knowing the Constitution, right, Mr. Aiello?
3. Justice Thomas doesn't speak much during oral argument leaving Mr. Aiello (and some other liberals) to speculate he is ill-informed and/or is unable to analyze complex issues. Never mind Mark Twain's refrain about better to keep quiet and have people think you are a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Oh, by the way, it is to Mr. Aiello (not Clarence Thomas) that I offer Mark Twain's advice.
All in all, a very unimpressive letter from Mr. Aiello and a "bad" to the PG for printing it.
