There has been much made about the need for new gun control laws in recent months. I understand the concern, but I also have concerns about our constitutional rights. As Ben Franklin said, "Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither."
Having read the papers lately, it seems the majority of shootings in this city, and all others, have been committed by illegally obtained guns. In fact, in a recent police shooting in this city, a man who had previously pleaded guilty to illegal firearms possession -- and escaped last year from a halfway house -- has been charged. Why was this man allowed back on the streets? Two fine police officers were wounded because of this incident and the failure of our justice system.
I feel for these latest victims, as I do for all victims of gun violence, but wouldn't common sense dictate that we respect law-abiding citizens and focus our efforts on the criminals and enforce tough penalties for illegal gunholders?
