The UPMC $100 million contribution to the Pittsburgh Promise is really great. It will certainly enable many kids to attend college.
This donation does, however, raise a serious question.
Since UPMC is a nonprofit institution, doesn't this $100 million represent an overcharge to its health care customers? Additionally, many of those customers live in areas where they can't benefit from the Pittsburgh Promise.
I have no simple solution to the high cost of a college education or the high cost of health care. It does seem, however, that this is a classic case of robbing Peter to pay Paul!
