Every citizen should be armed. That includes AK-47s. When our forefathers gave us the right to bear arms in the Constitution, they weren't concerned about our right to hunt rabbits. They were concerned about big government enforcing their will on a defenseless population.
When I listened to news of the massacre of the 20 children and watched on TV as the names of the innocents were listed one by one, tears came to my eyes. That was a terrible tragedy. I was traveling in Cambodia at the time and had just visited one of the killing fields, where the government in the 1970s slaughtered its own citizens.
In order to control the people, the government decided it needed to get rid of the intelligentsia. All teachers and professors were rounded up and killed after they dug their own graves. Schools were closed and turned into jails and torture chambers. Religious personnel were killed because they were leeches on the products of the country and did not provide any worthwhile function. Women were raped before they were beheaded and buried. Children were beaten and then killed.
The population was defenseless because they had no weapons. That is a condition that exists there now. Only the government is allowed to own weapons.
The improper use of guns by bad people causes much sadness, and we must do what we reasonably can to prevent such events in the future. However, those corrective actions should not include removing weapons from the majority of our citizenry. Our forefathers understood the need for an armed constituency.
