In reference to the Dec. 25 letter "Be Open to God," Pastor Johann Christoph Arnold said the Newtown tragedy happened because we have driven God out of our public schools.
I'm sure Pastor Arnold believes that his god is a benevolent god; if so why did his god allow this to happen? I'm sure he believes that his god would have the power to stop this tragedy if he wanted, yet he did not. This happened, according to Pastor Arnold, because the students in their classroom couldn't continue to praise or pray to God in their schools. Pastor Arnold seems to believe that his god acts for good only if people praise or pray to him. If Pastor Arnold's god allowed this to happen and could have prevented it, his god is a sociopath, and if his god could not stop this from happening, he is powerless to do anything, so why call him God?
The main reason this happened is our proliferation of guns in this country. In Japan, where 70 to 80 percent are nonbelievers in a supernatural being, there are only 0.06 deaths per 100,000 while in the United States it is over 36 deaths per 100,000. Japan's gun ownership is 3.2 guns per 1,000 people, as opposed to the United States where it is close to 1,000 guns per 1,000 people. I would think this proves Pastor Arnold's theory about why this tragedy happened is complete nonsense. This happened because of our lax gun control laws.
All those congressmen and -women who let the law against assault weapons and large magazine clips expire now have this blood on their hands.
