I found it disappointing yet predictable that Republican congressman Tim Murphy failed to mention gun control in his Forum piece in Sunday's PG regarding the Newtown tragedy. He focused totally on the mental health aspect of the problem and stated that we should not jump to conclusions regarding a solution. In effect, he basically told police departments, college presidents and schoolteachers around the country as well as parents and grandparents that this is not the time to do anything about restrictions on assault weapons.
Mr. Murphy's self-praise of his work in and out of government regarding mental health issues may be well deserved. However, for Rep. Murphy not to acknowledge that some form of gun control is also needed shows that we cannot count on his help for a realistic solution to reduce the number of such tragedies.
