While George Bush was busy running up a huge deficit after Bill Clinton's surplus, Dick Cheney was telling us that deficits don't matter! He must have been wrong (again), as that is all we have been hearing about since President Barack Obama took office, and we're hearing it from Republicans who ran them up in the first place.
Clearly, additional revenue is needed to bring the deficit down. The Tea Party and Grover Norquist want to reduce the size of government to "get it down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub." I don't know what it would be like to live in a country with such a tiny government. I do know that I wouldn't want to.
I feel better knowing that the Centers for Disease Control is there for us, that the National Institutes of Health funds research to help cure us, that FEMA is there to protect us and that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting can fund programs to enlighten us, among so many other things. For this to happen, we all have to pay more in taxes. Donald Trump and Mitt Romney will survive if they have to pay more, and so will you and I.
The country needs to be funded, and it needs a savings account. No one knows what catastrophe is around the corner that we may need to deal with. Ignoring this is simply foolish.
The time has come to give the thinking of old Grover and his puppets -- such as Tom Corbett and Pat Toomey -- the heave-ho.
