Why are they not discussing the environment?

I'd like to address the subject of "Presidential politics: Are we environmentally doomed?" This in no way refers to either of the candidates for president of the United States. What it specifically addresses is the following: How many of you reading this letter to the editor are truly shocked that not a single question during the debates has been posed to the candidates about the environment -- an issue all of us should be concerned about, whether rich or poor, black or white, employed or unemployed?

We will have nothing to celebrate should we conquer the issues of the economy and the national debt if we don't pay sufficient attention to -- and allocate lots of money for -- protection of our environment! Over the years we've heard so much about the dangers of global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, species of animals becoming extinct, fracking, and more, and yet it seems that we have turned away from dealing with these issues.

People, if you want your children, your children's children and so on to reap the benefits of a healthy Earth, then I believe it is essential for all of us to demand that President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney spend some time talking about these issues -- and whether or not we are environmentally doomed!
